Spirit of Niwot
Red Door Series
oil & cold wax on wood panel
30" x 30"
Niwot was a Native American chief of the South Arapaho tribe near Boulder CO. Every summer his tribe, along with other tribes in the area, would gather at Gold Lake to celebrate their sun dance. Niwot was beloved by many and known as a peacemaker. There are no photographs of him and no definitive knowledge of his death. Most historians believe he was killed at the Sand Creek Massacre along with many others of his tribe. I feel his spirit still lives at Gold Lake and this painting honors him and our Native Americans brothers and sisters.
